Extensive testing for asbestos on a demolition site in North Melbourne has been undertaken.
Ongoing tests for airborne asbestos fibres have come back with negative results. However, small fragments of cement sheeting which contain asbestos material have been found in some of the debris on the site.
The risk to people on site and in surrounding properties is low, but, as is usual practice, all waste material on the site will now be treated as contaminated and appropriately bagged and removed.
The site's management is required to employ a Class A asbestos removalist to undertake this work, which is expected to take up to two weeks.
Until this work is completed, appropriate precautions will remain in place. This will include site security, dust suppression over the site and ongoing air monitoring.
Neighbouring properties will be informed of the removal work before it begins.
