WorkSafe continues to investigate the death of a farmer who accidentally set fire to himself near Dimboola yesterday after his legs became trapped in machinery.
WorkSafe understands the man lit some hay to raise the alarm, but the blaze grew out of control and engulfed the farmer.
WorkSafe investigators, who attended the scene today, believe the 70-year-old man was driving a tractor towing a hay baler and accumulator – which stacks 10 bales at a time – when the incident occurred about 1pm yesterday.
The man had stepped on to the accumulator to deal with a problem but became caught when a component moved and trapped his legs.
The man was flown to hospital suffering burns to 95 per cent of his body; he died early this morning.
WorkSafe investigators will assist police in preparing a report for the coroner.
